What are the effects of azelaic acid on skin care

What is azelaic acid?

1. Azaleic acid, also known as azalea acid, although called azalea acid, has no relationship with azaleas. As an acid, azelaic acid is not photosensitive and can be used during the day. Compared to common organic acids such as salicylic acid and fruit acid, it is less irritating and milder. It is still important to pay attention to normal sun protection.

Adipic acid needs to reach a concentration of more than 10% to have good effects, but high concentrations of adipic acid have poor solubility. If made into a paste, it may not be completely dissolved, affecting the effect and causing poor skin sensation

2. The efficacy of azelaic acid

1) Acne removal, improvement of acne, rosacea, acne scars, pigmentation

Adipic acid reduces the synthesis of filamentous keratin, thereby reducing excessive keratinization of hair follicles and inhibiting keratinization of the epidermal layer, which has the effect of unblocking pores. It can prevent the formation of acne, lighten acne scars, and inhibit pigment deposition after inflammation. Azelaic acid is a very good medication for treating acne. But it is generally only used to treat mild to moderate acne, and in clinical practice, it is combined with retinoic acid to treat more severe moderate to severe acne.

2) Whitening and lightening spots

Azelaic acid inhibits melanin production and peels off epidermal melanin

3) Oil control

5 α - reductase is a key enzyme in skin androgen metabolism, and androgens can stimulate sebaceous gland secretion of oil. Azelaic acid can effectively inhibit 5 α - reductase, thereby improving oil secretion.

3. Precautions

Is azelaic acid photosensitive: It is not photosensitive and can be used during the day. During this time, pay attention to moisturizing the skin.

Azelaic acid needs to establish tolerance

Azelaic acid has almost the same adverse reactions as acids, such as redness, itching, dryness, etc. It is recommended to use it for the first time from low concentrations, small areas, and small amounts, gradually establishing tolerance.

What is the optimal concentration for using azelaic acid?

For the treatment of skin diseases, azelaic acid should be used as a drug with a concentration of 15% or higher to have good effects. For daily skin problems, it can be used up to 15-20% (acne, pigmentation)
